Abu Dhabi

  •

The island capital of the United Arab Emirates is a cosmopolitan city where 21st century architecture and a Manhattan-like Corniche skyline sit happily alongside more traditional facilities. A secure destination – it was listed by Mercer Consultants as the safest city in the Middle East – the city has a spectacular waterfront which is accessible to all and dotted with public parks and lush landscaping. Visitor attractions abound and can be found in detail on www.visitabudhabi.ae and major events are held year-round and can be tracked on www.abudhabievents.ae.

Noted for its long-held tradition of hospitality, hotels and restaurants in the city offer superb service often with award-winning food and beverage. The choice of cuisine is extensive. Shopping is a popular pastime and there are a number of modern, marble-clad shopping malls yet traditional souks offer fresh fish, carpets and an array of traditional handicrafts. Gold is among one of the best buys being sold by weight rather than workmanship. Bargaining is expected.

Public transport is clean and efficient and metered taxis are plentiful. It is easy to get around. Trips to nearby Saadiyat Island and Yas Island which have a number of artistic, golfing and theme park attractions are recommended. Abu Dhabi is blessed with three, 18-hole championship-ready golf courses within a 25 mile radius supported by a nine-hole, floodlit down town course and a challenging sand course close to the international airport.
